Description:
A small and compact, long-necked brown duck with darker crown and less distinct dark stripe on lower hindneck. Adult distinguished from Greater by half-moon white frontal band on head (white typically extending as point at front of crown), and yellow eye-ring. Has slightly darker head and neck, and less extensive black barring on belly.
Distribution:
Rare passage migrant through major waterways and lakes all across Gilgit-Baltistan. Landing in the region during cloudy/harsh weather, at lakes, marshes, rivers and streams with fringe vegetation up to 3500m, avoiding turbulent waters.
Behavior:
Foraging regime and local movements strongly dictated by highly specialized food requirements. Feeds mostly on land, by grazing. Essentially vegetarian; grass, roots, leaves, stems, seed heads, fruits and sprouts of wide variety of plants, complemented in winter with grain, potatoes and other vegetables.
